Bad breath, or halitosis, is an imbalance of bugs- too many bad bugs and not enough good bugs or not the right good bugs. Bad bugs are most commonly bacterias, but can also be parasites of fungi like candida. The over growth of bad bugs can be in the mouth; stomach; small intestines; colon; sinuses or throat.

Common Causes of Bad Breath

MOUTH

– gum disease; cavities; poor oral hygiene

STOMACH

– lack of hydrochloric acid (excess meat; food intolerance; over eating)

– heliobacteria pylori (stomach bug tested by breath test or blood test)

SIBO

– small intestine bacteria overgrowth (food intolerance; candida; leaky gut; poor food combining)

POOR LIVER FUNCTION

COLON

– constipation; excessive carbohydrates; parasite overgrowth

Other causes can include Sinusitis, post nasal drip, snoring, tonsillitis, anxiety, heavy metal toxicity, diabetes and dehydration.

Bad breath CAN be treated!

Improving your oral hygiene will assist in the treatment of bad breath:

1. Gum brush

2. Pickets

3. Floss

4. Feather toothbrush

5. Organic mouthwash BY ESSENTIAL OXYGEN http://www.essentialoxygen.com/

6. Oil pulling with coconut oil

You can increase hydrochloric acid in the stomach by taking 1 dessert spoon of apple cider vinegar or ACV in half a glass of water 1-2 times per day after food.

Taking probiotics and digestive enzymes will improve the bacteria in the small intestine.

It’s best to see your naturopath for further diagnosis and treatment if you suspect you’re suffering from helicobacteria pylori, candida, leaky gut, or food intolerances.

They can prescribed supplements such as aloe vera; super greens; anti-parasitic treatments; anti-candida treatments, fermented foods, and help you with food combining and other nutritional treatments for these conditions.

There are 3 stages to mastitis –

1. Inflammation with possible blockage. The area is pink, swollen and sore.

2. Inflammation and local infection. The area is very red with at least one hard lump that is very painful.

3. Local and systemic infection with symptoms of fever, body aches and pain, hallucinations and possible puss and blood in the breast milk or secreting from the breast. Red lines radiate from the original infection site.

The third stage of mastitis needs medical attention and close monitoring.

Draining the breast – After feeding your baby from the affected breast, fill a hand basin with hot as you can stand water. Lean over the water immersing the breast. Using olive oil and long downward, draining strokes massage the breast working out any lumps or congestion. Remember to massage right from the glands in the armpit.

Raw grated potato poultice- After feeding your baby from the affected breast grate a raw white potato and completely cover the affected breast. Place an old washer / cloth over the breast and wear a bra to hold in place. The bra will be stained purple from the potato. Leave for 2 hours before washing the breast and feeding again.

Green Clay and Manuka honey poultice- After feeding your baby from the affected breast and draining it, make the following poultice and leave on for 2 hours or for as long as possible before washing the breast and feeding your baby again. One desert spoon of green clay; 10drops of golden seal; 2 drops of tea tree oil; one desert spoon of manuka/medicated/ raw honey. Mixed well together to make a paste.

Supplements and remedies – The best treatment is a herbal antibiotic and lymph draining remedy which must only be used under supervision as these are strong herbs and not suited to all babies and nursing mothers. The remedy may contain Echinacea, goldenseal, clivers, poke root, burdock, thyme, olive leaf, blue flag and garlic.

Vitamin C powder; garlic in food or capsules; probiotics (taken separately to garlic and other antibiotic remedies; homoepathics such as phytolacca, kali sulph, kali mur, calc flour and silica.

Lots and lots of water, fresh juices, herbal teas and soups. Not drinking enough water and not resting enough and the primary causes of mastitis.

REST, REST, REST!!

Being a long term breast feeding, working Mum ( I have fed for 6 years of my life) I have had mastitis (all stages) dozens of times. I usually finish work as soon as possible. Feed my baby as painful as this is. Have a huge dose of vitamin C. Drain the breast. Apply a green clay poultice. Have another huge drink of water. Go to bed wearing several layers of clothes and 1-2 blankets and go to sleep. If it is still there when I wake up I make up some herbs and rest etc some more.

Image found here

Stevia
Stevia is 300 times sweeter than sugar. Stevia has no calories and no glycemic impact making it suitable for diabetics and those watching their weight. Proper stevia is actually green as it comes from a natural herb.

Coconut Sugar
Coconut sugar is nutritious and has a low score on the glycemic index. It tastes similar to brown sugar but is slightly richer. You can substitute coconut sugar for traditional sugar. Once tapped for sap, the trees can go on producing for 20 years and produce more sugar per hectare than sugar cane.

Date Sugar
Made from dried dates; the fruit is dehydrated then ground to produce the sugar. Retaining many of the nutritional benefits of dates, it has a rich sweet flavour that makes it an ideal alternative to brown sugar. Unfortunately it doesn’t melt and is difficult to dissolve, making it unsuitable for use in drinks and some baking recipes. However it’s a great additional to wholegrain bread.

Raw/Organic Honey
Sweeter than sugar, packed with vitamins, and honey also has antimicrobial properties. It does have more calories than normal sugar but because it’s sweeter you use less of it. Use in hot or cold beverages, or baking cookies and biscuits.

Molasses
These are by-products of the sugar production process. Although producing sugar from sugar cane has a negative environmental impact, not using all the products only compounds it. Because of the way traditional tabletop sugar is produced (heating the top layer which forms the crystals you have in your bowl), many of the nutritional benefits are left in the molasses. Blackstrap molasses is perhaps the most beneficial and is a good source of iron and calcium. It’s quite thick and viscous and is best used in baking. It is also sweeter than sugar and so you’ll need less.

Barley Malt Syrup
It’s easily digested and has a low glycemic index. It is however not as sweet as sugar, and its distinctive taste makes it a poor choice for tea and coffee. A good choice for cooking or baking, as it has a distinct malty taste.

Yacon
A relative to the Jerusalem artichoke, is available as dehydrated chips or syrup. The syrup is high in iron and only mildly glycaemic. Choose certified organic.

Agave Nectar
About 25% sweeter than sugar, you can use less agave when replacing it for sugar. Also contains prebiotic bacteria to assist gut health.

Brown rice syrup – traditionally used as a sugar substitute, brown rice sugar has been found to be high in arsenic, so may be best avoided. Study regarding arsenic levels – http://now.dartmouth.edu/2012/02/organic-food-sweetener-may-be-a-hidden-source-of-dietary-arsenic/

Xylitol – another common sugar substitute, xylitol is not natural and is created from chemicals in a laboratory, so it’s not a natural alternative.

Pure Maple syrup has a low glycemic index and is wonderful.
